Proportioner Basics: What Every Spray Foam Contractor Should Know

Every spray foam rig is built around one central piece of equipment: the proportioner. Everything else — the hoses, the gun, even the generator — exists to support what the proportioner does. Understanding it well is the difference between troubleshooting confidently and guessing.

What a Proportioner Actually Does

A proportioner has three core jobs: heat the two chemical components (the A side and B side) to the correct temperature, pressurize them to matched levels, and deliver them to the spray gun in a precise 1:1 ratio. All three have to happen simultaneously and consistently — a proportioner that's off on any one of these produces off-ratio foam, regardless of how well the other two are performing.

The Three Methods of Proportioning

Spray foam proportioners generally fall into a few functional categories based on how they achieve that precise mixing:

  • Fixed-ratio hydraulic proportioners — the most common type for standard 1:1 spray foam systems, using matched hydraulic pumps to maintain equal flow on both sides.
  • Air-purge proportioners — smaller, portable units often used for lower-volume work, using compressed air to help drive and mix the components.
  • Plural-component pump systems — used for higher-volume commercial work, often with more sophisticated electronic ratio monitoring and adjustment.

The right type for a given contractor depends on job volume, portability needs, and budget — there's no universally "best" choice, just the right fit for the work being done.

How the Proportioner Valve Works

At the mixing point, the proportioner valve controls the precise flow of each component into the mixing chamber (or directly to the gun, depending on system design). The valve has to open and close in sync for both sides — any mechanical lag, wear, or blockage on one side relative to the other is exactly what produces ratio drift. This is why valve and seal condition is one of the first things checked when troubleshooting off-ratio foam.

Reading the Gauges

A proportioner's pressure and temperature gauges are the primary window into whether it's operating correctly:

  • Matched temperature on both A and B side gauges, within the range specified for the foam being used.
  • Matched pressure on both sides — a persistent gap is a warning sign even if the numbers individually look "normal."
  • Stable readings — gauges that fluctuate significantly during a spray run point to a mechanical issue, not just a settings adjustment.

Why This Matters Beyond the Spec Sheet

A contractor who understands what their proportioner is actually doing — not just which buttons to press — catches problems earlier, troubleshoots more effectively, and produces more consistent work. It's the difference between reacting to a bad batch of foam after the fact and catching a developing issue before it ever reaches the gun.
